Beginner Longarm Training Retreat

9:00am to
6:00pm each day.
I stay late if you are not finished, or if you need questions answered.

You will have a Longarm Quilting Machine to use the entire time.  

You will not share a machine.  
You will work at your own pace.
Class size is limited to 4 students.  
Day One:
9:00am to
6:00pm
Introduction: Machine Frame and Longarm Quilting:
1) How does the quilt frame work.
Instruction on all of the basic features on the quilt frame.
2) How does the longarm machine work.
Instruction on all of the basic features on the quilting machine.

Introduction: Loading The Quilt:
1) Getting the backing ready. What to plan for, look for and potential problems.
2) Getting the batting ready. What to plan for, look for and potential problems.
3) Getting the quilt top ready. What to plan for, look for and potential problems.

Introduction: Loading The Quilt and Loading Options:
1) Learn how to determine the correct size for your backing and batting.
2) Learn how to pin the quilt to the frame.
Advantages and Disadvantages.
3) Learn how to load the quilt to the frame, using Zippers Leaders.
Advantages and Disadvantages.
4) Learn how to load the quilt to the frame, using Velcroe Leaders.
Advantages and Disadvantages.

Introduction: Threading The Machine, and Loading The Bobbin:
Your quilt is loaded, and you are almost ready to quilt. What's next?
1) Threading the machine correctly, and potential problems.
2) Loading the bobbin correctly, and potential problems.
3) Checking your stitches and tension before quilting.
4) Trouble shooting tension issues and thread breakage issues.

Introduction: Channel Locks:
1) Why they are necessary.
2) How to use them.
3) How to add them to a frame, that doesn't come with channel locks.

Introduction: Advancing The Quilt Top, Batting and Backing:
1) In what order, do you do each step.
2) What things do you need to consider.
3) How to trouble shoot the potential problems.
4) How to keep the quilt square, throughout the quilting process.

Indept, Discussion About Thread Breakage, and Bad Tension:
Thread breakage and bad tension, will be the biggest problems you will experience, in
your longarm quilting journey.
1) Why does the thread break? How do I correct this.
2) Why do I have bad tension? How do I correct this.
During this lecture part of the class, you will see a variety of different weight's
ply's, and tex's, of thread. You will learn how adjust your top and bobbin tension,
to ensure wonderful stitching. We will also discuss how different battings and fabrics can
affect you quilting and stitching, and tips to overcome these problems.

Lunch Break:

Hands on:
1) Load a quilt top.
2) Load batting.
3) Load a quilt back.
4) Free hand quilting.
5) Constant attention paid to rolling the quilt properly.
6) Constant attention paid to basting and clamping properly.
7) Constant attention paid to checking and testing your stitches and tension.

Day Two
9:00am - 6:00pm
Review of Day One.
Loading the quilt for Pantos
In dept Pantograph Instruction
1)  Where to get pantos, free on the web, purchase, or make your own.
2)  Sizes and things to consider when picking pantos
3)  How to load the Pantos
4)  How to align the Pantos
5)  How to advance your quilt, so your Pantos interlock.
You will quilt at least one sample quilt, using Pantos
.
Take lunch, when you choose.

"How Do I Quilt This Lecture"
Load the quilt for Beginner Custom.
Demo of rulers, stencils, insets, laser from the front.
Maintenance of your longarm.
